Spatial Distribution and Characterization of Microplastics along the Central Algerian Coast

dc.description.abstractMicroplastic (MP) pollution is a growing environmental concern due to its persistence, widespread distribution, and potential to transport hazardous contaminants. This study assessed the abundance, distribution, and characteristics of MPs in beach and marine sediments and in surface seawater, in two coastal sites along the western Algiers coastline: Sidi Fredj and El Djamila Beach (Ain Benian). Sampling followed standardized TSG-ML/MSFD protocols. MPs were extracted by density separation using saturated NaCl solution (1.20 g cm⁻³), visually characterized under stereomicroscopy, and chemically identified by FTIR spectroscopy, and analyzed for associated trace metals by ICP-OES. MP particles were detected in all matrices and sampling stations. Beach sediment abundances were similar at both sites(709.81 ± 295.74 and 697.98 ± 175.73 MPs kg⁻¹). In contrast, marine sediment contamination was higher at Sidi Fredj (773.39 ± 679 MPs kg⁻¹) and seawater contamination was greater at Ain Benian (612 MPsL⁻¹). Fibers dominated all matrices, followed by fragments, foams, and films, while pellets were absent. Particles smaller than 1 mm and transparent particles were most abundant. FTIR analysis identified seven polymer types, including PP, PE, HDPE, PET, PVC, PS, and PA, with polyethylene (PE) being the most prevalent. ICP-OES analysis of trace metals revealed higher concentrations in MPs than in beach sediment for Pb, Zn, and Cu, confirming the role of MPs as active metal vectors, while Cr showed no matrix-specific enrichment and Ni reflected predominantly geogenic sediment inputs. The results indicate predominantly secondary MP contamination from urban, domestic, textile, and fishing-related sources, and emphasize MPs' role as carriers of trace metals, highlighting the need for long-term monitoring and improved coastal waste management along the central Algerian coast.
