Abstract
With the aim of evaluating the levels of contamination of the superficial sediment in the coastal
fringe of the El Djamila bay and the burial capacity of PAHs; a study has been established. The
sediment matrix was exposed to two types of analysis: a granulometric analysis using the dry
sieving method, simultaneously carried out with an estimation of the moisture content and organic
matter. The second is about analyzing the extracted PAHs with the Ultraviolet Fluorescence
Spectroscopy method. The results allow identifying the textural classes varying from silt to coarse
sand. The mean values of the retention capacity were 15.27% and 3.88%, and the PAHs
concentrations were 13.31±6.72 µg/g and 2.74±1.64 µg/g for the stations of the harbor and the
beaches respectively. High concentrations exceeding the norms were observed, yet expected given
quantities of discharged effluents in the area. In addition, a strong positive correlation was found
between the burial capacity, the organic matter percentage, and the PAHs concentration.
